Goth (2003)
Posted on 28 May, 2007 by Princess Jolene Goth
Writer and Director: Brad Sykes
Starring: Phoebe Dollar, Laura Reilly, Dave Stann
Year: 2003

Did I just see rape? A man getting, um, raped? What? That’s certainly not something you see everyday. Not that I see rape everyday, but generally, females are rape victims. In this movie, a man is not only raped, he is discarded out of a moving van. The excitement doesn’t stop with the man rape. This film is filled with raunchy naughtiness. If you have a thing for gothic lesbian sex, oh yes, you can find it right here--smeared black lipstick and all.

Goth, written and directed by Brad Sykes, is a ride with Chrissy (Laura Reilly) and Boone (Dave Stann). And when I say, ride, I mean a literal ride in a van through a hell with their tour guide, properly named, Goth (Phoebe Dollar). The ride starts when Chrissy and Boone are picked up at a show by this aggressive and sexy Goth chick that promises the best ride of their lives with some funky ass hallucinatory drug.  Boone is reluctant at first, but she wins him over by kicking some guys’ asses who are attempting to mug the couple outside of the club. They do the drugs given to them (out of a little skull—that’s not suspicious or anything) and wake up in a van that looks like a Halloween Superstore employee decorated it. In the midst of skull lights hanging from the roof, Chrissy goes along with the adventure and Boone is, once again, hesitant. But he’s scared, so he complies.

This scary van is where the male rape takes place. Um, yeah, I’d try to get out of there if I saw a man being raped with a knife at his throat. First question I had was “Why the fuck does Chrissy go along with this?” I mean, honestly, why would you agree to even be in a car with a psycho rapist chick? I’d probably jump out of the moving vehicle instead of listen to the psychotic ramblings of Goth. Chrissy has her reasons, but we don’t find out until later (hint: it has to do with revenge). Even so, the audience is made to watch the odd antics the couple is put through at the urgings of Goth. The most disturbing situation is Boone fucking a portly hooker. This was probably worse than any blood or gore shown throughout the whole flick.

Goth continues to fuck with the couple’s mind throughout the remainder of the film. Chrissy tries to turn it around on Goth, but the joke ends up being on her, when she transforms into Goth. And I’m not talking literally. This isn’t supernatural, but her need for revenge fuels her anger and turns her into a monster just like Goth. In flashback scenes we see Chrissy’s innocence in interaction with her sister. Then we see her in revenge mode as a goth and then in the end, we see her turn into someone or something else completely. The film is essentially about Chrissy’s transformation in a mind trippy setting.

Overall, I was impressed with the filmmaking as a whole. It was the best of Brain Damage Films that I’ve seen. The film work was professional, the cinematography, done by Jay Truesdale, was decent, and the sound was good, unlike some low budget films that have issues with buzzing audio. The acting was spot on; the actors had good grips on their characters. I also have to commend Ron Karkoska on his special effects including some fantastic throat slitting at the end. I can’t say that the film actually says anything about the goth lifestyle, but it’s entertaining and decently made.

I guess people either love this movie or hate it, there really is no in-between. I saw this flick two or three times, and I agree it has its moments. This film will be available for download here in a few short weeks.
